[EXPLIQUE] 20.04.4 Transfert intermittent vers DD externe via USB2.

Bonjour,

Lorsque je transfère des fichiers vers un DD externe via mes 2 ports USB2, le transfert s'arrête régulièrement pour ~20 secondes avant de reprendre à une vitesse normale.
Ce n'est pas le cas sur mon port USB3, avec lequel le transfert est fluide.
J'ai reproduit ce comportement avec 2 DD externes. J'ai fait un test de performance via Disques, qui semble normal (mais qui s'est interrompu plusieurs fois, comme pour le transfert)

Merci pour ton aide.
Oui, les 2 DD fonctionnent parfaitement avec l'USB3 et ont des transferts saccadés sur les USB2, notamment pour l'écriture qui, pour le Seagate est à ~60Mo/s, quand la lecture est à 10Mo/s mais sans interruption.

Voici le résultat :

Pour voir si les fichiers peuvent avoir une influence :

find ~ \( ! -user $USER -o ! -group $USER \)

si certains ont des noms que tu ne veux pas affichés tu peux les remplacer .

je pense que l' unité c ' est plutot des MB / s  non ? ( ca me semble beaucoup 60 MO / s en ecriture en USB2 )


on pourrait aussi faire un reperage peut etre qu ' un truc apparaitra avec ca :
lance un transfert et passe la commande suivante a la reprise du transfert :

sudo dmesg | tail -50

Je confirme que c'est bien MB/Mo, 1 film d'un Go en 15-20s s'il n'y avait pas les interruptions. Oui, plutôt bien pour de l'USB2. Le test dans le premier message est à 23MB/s.

"L'interruption" en écriture sur un périphérique "lent" est normale !

C'est juste un effet de la cache write-back du kernel.

Quand tu écris avec des outils standards, les données vont dans la cache du kernel et celui-ci écrit "quand il a le temps" sur le disque.

Le phénomène est invisible en USB3 car c'est "suffisamment rapide" pour vider la cache du kernel de sorte que tu ne voies pas trop l'effet. En USB2 cependant, c'est visible.

Le test avec "Disques" fonctionne normalement car celui-ci écrit directement sur le disque sans passer par la cache du kernel pour éviter des mesurer des choses incohérentes.

Pour t'en convaincre, ou vérifier, pendant que tu lances une copie en USB2, tu lances :

watch grep -e Dirty: -e Writeback: /proc/meminfo

Tu devrais voir le compteur "Dirty" monter rapidement et se stabiliser à une certaine valeur (dépendant de ta RAM).
Tant que le système peut écrire "en RAM" tu vas avoir l'impression que la copie est rapide (en fait bien plus rapide que la vitesse théorique de l'USB2), puis ensuite ça va chuter dramatiquement parce que le kernel va attendre que le taux de pages sales (Dirty) baisse un peu, donc qu'elles soient écrites réellement, avant de poursuivre.

Cela donne "l'impression" de saccades, mais est donc totalement normal sur de l'USB2 et avec un système suffisamment rapide !

Au passage, c'est aussi pourquoi on recommande de ne pas "arracher sauvagement" une clé USB : si les écritures sont encore en RAM, elle seront perdues !

A la rigueur une seconde tout au plus , je veux bien , mais pas 20 secondes .

il faudrait , pour etre certain , avoir une longueur de transfert plus longue et un retour de dmesg plus long aussi .
En tout cas , si tu n' as branché aucun disque sur un port usb pendant le transfert , il semblerait que ton disque se deconnecte puis se reconnecte :

A partir de ce constat , plusieurs possibilités sont a envisager :
le disque a un probleme ( mauvais connection , surchauffe ou autre )
l ' alimentation fournit par ton port USB2 , n ' est pas suffisante pour " tenir " la charge du disque .

Bref , comme je le disais , il faut y aller a taton en procedant par elimination afin de reduire les champs des possibles .
le cable et le disque en defaut sur le port USB3 => test : donne le resultat
le cable + le disque pas en defaut sur le port usb2 => test et donne le resultat .

en fonction des resultats il faudra faire des tests complementaires .


Autre chose :
on est bien d ' accord que tu ne passes pas par un HUB USB et que le disque est connecté directement au port USB de l ' ordi ?
est ce que un des disques a une alimentation externe ?

Oh non crois moi !

J'ai une clé USB3 "normale" en lecture (autour de 100Mo/s) et super lente en écriture, du genre 5 à 10Mo/s. Mes 2 PC ont respectivement 32 et 16Go de RAM. Eh bien crois moi, les "arrêts" sont bien plus que la seconde, et je n'ai pas chronométré, mais ça arrive sans doute facile à 10 sec voire plus. En définitive les écritures se passent bien et sans erreurs, mais si tu le fais par exemple avec pv (pour voir les débits), tu constates que ça varie de la vitesse de l'entrée (100Mo/sec) à zéro pendant plusieurs secondes quand la cache est pleine.

Après, comme tu montres le dmesg, avec un disque rotatif il y a aussi le problème de consommation et de port qui n'alimente pas assez. Aussi quand tu fais des accès ça pompe du jus et ça déconnecte.
L'USB3 possède une puissance supérieure à l'USB2 et devrait être moins sujet à cela.

Si c'est un problème de déconnexion à cause d'une consommation excessive par rapport à l'USB2, la solution est hardware, par exemple une alimentation par un câble double pour prendre le courant sur 2 sorties USB.

Merci pour vos retours. Quelques précisions :
- pas de hub
- l'un des disques est un 3.5 alimenté sur secteur (l'autre est un 2.5 avec un seul câble).
J'ai lancé cette commande

watch grep -e Dirty: -e Writeback: /proc/meminfo

Le Dirty monte à ~400MB avant de se vider en alternance avec le Writeback. C'est effectivement pendant cette période de vidange que le transfert vers le disqu externe semble arrêté.
Ce phénomène ne se produit pas de façon visible en transfert via l'USB3 (ni en externe->interne vers un SSD via l'USB2).

Ça a donc l'air "normal" ? Je n'avais jamais constaté ce phénomène sur Windows ou sur mon ancien ordinateur Ubuntu (qui avait il est vrai 2 USB3).

Bonjour , pendant les 682 secondes du dmesg ci-dessus , si tu n' as pas branché de disque via USB , je dirais que tu as probablement trop de chose connecté en USB qui demande du courant , et que de temps en temps il deconnecte un peripherique , on peut voir au moins 3 fois un disque ( re ) connecté via les ports USB :

En tant normal , tu devrais avoir  tes disques qui ne se connecte qu ' une fois , sauf si par exemple tu met l' ordi en veille ou bien sur , si tu debranches rebranches le disque .

Il se peut aussi que tu conjugues plusieurs phenomenes ...


tu peux aussi , ne consulter , que les lignes du dmesg qui contiennent usb , avec cette commande par exemple afin , d ' eviter de surcharger la sortie :

sudo dmesg | grep usb

Parfois , sur certaine carte mere , il existe une option dans le BIOS , qui permet d' envoyer plus de courant pour , par exemple servir de chargeur .
A verifier si tu n 'as pas une telle option disponible , ca pourrait peut etre resoudre le probleme .


Une autre solution , serait de passer par un HUB USB autoalimenté , tous ne le sont pas , et tous ne sont pas forcement compatible linux ...
ou de n ' acheter que des disques avec leur propre alimentation externe .


Si je comprends bien , le soucis n ' apparait que lorsque tu fais un transfert d ' un disque externe USB vers un autre disque externe USB le tout branché sur port USB 2 de l ' ordinateur ?
Si oui , dans ce cas , je dirais alors qu ' effectivement ca va amplifier le phenomene dont parles @zakhar et c ' est pour cela que tu le percois autant du fait , que ce soit du USB2 vers USB2 et la bande passante etant limitée comme il doit lire et ecrire vers 2 peripheriques sur le meme bus USB . un peu comme si il faisait : je lis les données sur le disque 1 , je met en cache , j ' ecris sur le disque 2 , et je recommence .

Le Dirty monte à ~400MB avant de se vider en alternance avec le Writeback. C'est effectivement pendant cette période de vidange que le transfert vers le disqu externe semble arrêté.
Ce phénomène ne se produit pas de façon visible en transfert via l'USB3 (ni en externe->interne vers un SSD via l'USB2).

Ça a donc l'air "normal" ? Je n'avais jamais constaté ce phénomène sur Windows ou sur mon ancien ordinateur Ubuntu (qui avait il est vrai 2 USB3).

Voila, c'est ce que j'expliquais, et c'est normal !

C'est le fonctionnement par défaut de la cache en écriture sur Linux.

Si ça ne produit pas cet effet visible en USB3, comme je l'explique aussi plus haut, c'est que l'USB3 est "trop rapide" pour que tu le constates : la cache se vide bien plus vite.

Mais visiblement tu cumules aussi avec l'autre problème qui est un défaut d'alimentation.

La différence entre les deux est que l'histoire de la cache va produire une copie correcte, le défaut d'alimentation c'est comme si tu avais débranché sauvagement le disque, et la copie sera corrompue.

Si tu ne constates pas la même chose sur W$ c'est normal, c'est pas vraiment optimisé comme système. lol

Il s'agit d'une copie d'une sauvegarde (~30Go) depuis mon "cloud 1fichier.com" via mon driver 1fichierfs, vers ma clé USB "lente".
Ainsi la courbe de débit montrée par la Freebox est significative.
On voit qu'au début, la vitesse est le maximum de la ligne fibre (1Gbps soit autour de 110Mo/s) c'est en fait bien plus rapide que l'USB2 !..
Mais ensuite ça sature et ça tombe vers zéro, et ça télécharge par à-coups.

Mon driver 1fichierfs montre clairement ça avec ses statistiques, on a des passages de plusieurs secondes à quasi zéro : en réalité quelques kilo-octets par seconde.

Pour une copie standard et constater le phénomène, vous pouvez utiliser le génial utilitaire pv au lieu d'un cp. Cela vous montrera le débit de copie.

Par exemple

pv /path/ma_sauvegarde >/path/ma/cle/USB/ma_sauvegarde

Vous constaterez le même phénomène que l'image ci-dessus.

Le premier "pic" dépend de votre RAM (et des réglages du Kernel). Comme j'ai 32Go de RAM sur cette machine, le "remplissage initial" est de l'ordre de 4 à 5Go (au lieu des 400Mo cités par thealpman)

Bonjour !

Merci iznobe pour ton aide, ci-dessous les réponses aux points que tu as soulevés :

  • l'un des disques est un 3.5 donc alimenté sur secteur, même comportement que le 2.5 alimenté par USB

  • j'ai regardé le BIOS, je n'ai pas vu l'option pour augmenter le courant fourni

  • j'ai connecté/déconnecté mes DD sur les USB pour faire les tests, d'où sans doute les entrées dans dmseg

  • les problèmes se produisent USB3->USB2 et SSD interne->USB2 mais pas SSD->USB3, c'est bien le port de sortie qui fait la différence

Merci Zakhar pour toutes ces précisions, ça explique bien ce qui se passe. (La capture d'écran n'apparaît pas bien dans ton post.)
